Yarragon

Is a small town in the West Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia. The town lies on the Princes Highway and the main Gippsland Railway line approximately halfway between the major towns of Warragul and Moe. Hills of the Strzelecki Ranges rise over 400 metres immediately to the south of the town, while the Moe River and the lowlands of the former (now drained) Moe Swamp lie to the north. At the 2006 census, Yarragon had a population of 1131.

Prior to 1984 Yarragon was like many other small country towns along the highway – travellers just passed through. That all changed when a specialist retail centre was established to capitalise on the huge volume of passing traffic. The complex is known as Gippsland Food and Wine and is an accredited Visitor Information Centre. Today Yarragon “The Cream of Gippsland” is a thriving village with many speciality shops (antiques, collectables, galleries, textiles, bookshops, cafés and tearooms) and is renowned for its range of gippsland produce.

History

The town was a centre for dairy farms in the vicinity (a former dairy factory lies to the north of the railway line), as well as logging activities in the heavily forested hills to the south. The Post Office opened around October 1878 as Waterloo, Gippsland and was renamed Yarragon in 1883. Known initially as Waterloo, the town of Yarragon was officially granted its title in 1883.  The town, which was once renowned for its booming timber industry and swampland, grew into a very successful pioneering town.  The first shops opened in 1879, the first hotel commenced business in 1880 and then an incredible 43 years later the town was connected to electricity. Devastating floods rocked Yarragon in 1934 followed by Black Friday bushfires in 1939.  Many of the early pioneering families still have descendents living in Yarragon Village today proving what a loyal and attractive place the town is. Yarragon today is a ‘bustling’ town, known affectionately as the browsers delight!  It is a village full to bursting with the unique and the unusual, the delicious and the delightful.  Arts, crafts, textiles, galleries, books, antiques, fashion, homewares, lollies, coffee and cakes.  Taste local cheeses and wines, smell freshly baked breads and pastries and savour all of the other delights the town has to offer.  Dine alfresco or in air-conditioned comfort during the warmer months, or by a log fire when the days are cooler. With quality accommodation in the town you can spend your time relaxing with a spa, walking through the beautiful surrounds of the Strzelecki ranges, or just using your place of rest as a base to explore the beautiful surrounds of Yarragon Village, Gippsland Gourmet Country and Walhalla. Yarragon welcomes you to taste, enjoy and experience the many attractions our Village has to offer.

Today

Significant expansion of facilities and businesses along Yarragon’s main Princes Highway streetscape since the 1990s aimed at capitalising on the tourist potential of passing traffic has resulted in the town being informally dubbed ‘Yarragon Village’.

The town has its own railway station on the Bairnsdale railway line.

Yarragon has an Australian Rules football team competing in the Mid Gippsland Football League.

The tourist town of Yarragon seemed a logical choice for a food outlet for our beef product. Since a drain was constructed around the town, about a century ago floods are a lot less likely. Tourism did not start in Yarragon until about 1975 when the Dunn family opened what is now ” Gippsland Food & Wine”.
A sticcado is a glass xylophone. Absolutely no connection with beef burgers or smoked beef. We chose this name because it was not common. We had numerous other things to deal with (make a decision and move on). After all music and food make good partners.
